Hot tub for the birds.

I spent a couple of hours in the kitchen Tuesday morning getting dinner (our noon meal) in the oven. And there was a steady parade of birds between the feeders and the birdbath. I think the key to a lot of birds in the winter is a heated birdbath. It is a hot tub for the birds and they love it.  So do the squirrels. They had a drink or two but I had my hands in the meatball mixture and was unable to  get a picture of them at the birdbath.

Top left, clockwise: nuthatch, flicker, blue jay, junco

Top left, clockwise: Goldfinch, more goldfinch, blue jay, house sparrow.

  1. How do you heat the bird water?? Love the flicker, I've never seen one.

  2. The bowl of the birdbath has a heater on the inside of it. It is plugged into a regular outlet. We sat it on a base from another birdbath we had. There are also solar ones and ones you just set down into a regular birdbath. We have had ours for years. It was a gift from one of the daughters. Check out birdbath heaters at They have gotten kind of pricey over the years.

  3. Oh MY! Such tasty friends you have! :)

We live in New Zealand - which is nice right now because it's summer and we LOVE sunpuddles!

So nice to meet you :)

  4. Ahhh, Summer. Even tho are weather is really good for this time of the year, summer sounds nice. What are your summer's and winter's like in New Zealand?
